The Artists Roundtable is an international forum for leading practitioners, hosted by Tamsin Dillon of SVA’s MA Curatorial Practice faculty.
Lamia Joreige is a Lebanese visual artist and filmmaker whose practice explores memory, history, time, archives, war, and the relationship between individual and collective experience. Working across film, photography, video, painting, writing, and installation, she frequently examines the Lebanese Civil War and its continuing impact on Beirut and its inhabitants. Her work combines archival research, personal testimony, fiction, and contemporary observation to question how histories are recorded, remembered, and reconstructed. Joreige has exhibited at institutions including the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, New Museum, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and was a Radcliffe Institute Fellow at Harvard University and the Institute for Ideas and Imagination at Columbia University. She is a co-founder and board member of Beirut Art Center, which she co-directed from 2009 to 2014.
Joriege will talk about her life in Beirut, where her practice explores the relationship between historical fact and fiction, communication through collective memory, and representation. We will hear about her contribution as the co-founder, director, and now board member of the Beirut Art Center, as well as what stands out for her as the most important aspects of her participation in many exhibitions and festivals internationally.
