The Curatorial Roundtable: Anna Mustonen (Helsinki)

Hosted by Steven Henry Madoff, Founding Chair of the MA Curatorial Practice at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

The Curatorial Roundtable, an international forum for curators and institutional leaders to discuss formative and current projects, is hosted by Steven Henry Madoff, Founding Chair of the MA Curatorial Practice at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Anna Mustonen is the Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki. At Kiasma, she plays a leading role in shaping the museum’s artistic program, particularly in relation to Nordic and international contemporary practices. Trained at University College London, where she earned her M.A. in History of Art, she has worked at leading international institutions and private galleries in Europe, including Tate, Kumu Art Museum, Haunch of Venison, and Victoria Miro. She has curated exhibitions for Fotografiska, Helsinki Kunsthalle, and Kai Art Center, Tallinn, among others. Mustonen is the curator of the Nordic Countries Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition—the Venice Biennale, 2026.

In this presentation, Mustonen will explore curatorial practices shaped by overlapping states of crisis, from the lingering impacts of the pandemic to the heightened political tensions framing international exhibitions today. The discussion reflects on how curators navigate between local and global contexts, and between national representation and transnational realities. How can curatorial strategies remain responsive, ethical, and imaginative amid restricted mobility, geopolitical polarization, and shifting institutional frameworks? In this context, she will consider curating not only as exhibition-making but as a process of negotiation, care, and responsibility in an increasingly complex global landscape.
