YONA BACKER is a strategic consultant and a producer/curator working in the field of contemporary art and philanthropy. She is the President of Third Streaming Advisory Services (2009 to the present), and the founder of Third Streaming, an interdisciplinary art space in downtown Manhattan (2010-2014). Third Streaming’s archives are housed at New York University’s Fales Library & Special Collections. She also represents The Alvin Baltrop Trust, and oversees The Alvin Baltrop Archive Project. Over her twenty-year career in the arts, she has been a curator, a program developer for arts and culture spaces, a strategic consultant for nonprofits and foundations, and an experienced grantmaker with a special focus on artist-centered institutions and under-represented groups. Before launching Third Streaming Advisory Services, she worked as Senior Program Officer at The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. During her tenure there, she evaluated grant proposals and researched potential grantee arts organizations across the country and around the globe as well as helped conceive and develop new national programs. Examples include the Curatorial Research and Art Writers Grant Programs; another was a pilot program that made small grants to artist collectives and emerging art groups. In addition, she also worked to expand existing grant programs, including a national capacity-building initiative designed to strengthen the infrastructures of artist-centered arts organizations and independent art journals. As a consultant, she provides strategic guidance and develops organizational work plans that are practical to implement. Backer evaluates and designs philanthropic giving programs, coaches nonprofit leaders and manages complex planning efforts that result in systemic change. To address shifts in funding practices in an increasingly global economy, she works with funders and organizations to streamline practices and identify integrated solutions. Rooted in an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the international arts and culture field, Backer’s team-based approach stresses creativity, customization, confidentiality. Born in Jamaica and raised in the Netherlands, Backer came to New York in the 1980s. She has a master’s degree in art history and archaeology from Columbia University, and a bachelor of arts in art history and history from Hunter College.
