The Artists Roundtable is an international forum for leading practitioners, hosted by Tamsin Dillon of SVA’s MA Curatorial Practice faculty.
Mariana Castillo Deball is a Mexican interdisciplinary artist whose practice examines the relationships between archaeology, anthropology, history, science, philosophy, and contemporary art. Working through sculpture, installation, performance, books, and research-based projects, she investigates how objects acquire meaning and how museums, archives, and institutions shape interpretations of the past. Her projects frequently involve extensive research into archaeological collections, historical archives, and systems of knowledge. Castillo Deball has received numerous international awards, including the Preis der Nationalgalerie, Zurich Art Prize, Ars Viva Award, and Prix de Rome, and has exhibited extensively internationally.
Deball will introduce us to the processes integral to the development of her works, whether for small works or the large-scale interventions she has become known for. She will talk about how she begins her research, how she finds new paths through histories, and what she picks up on as she finds a thread through. We’ll have a chance to hear her talk about recent and current projects, especially Feathered Changes, the new work created as part of the new David Geffen galleries at LACMA in Los Angeles.
