The Artists Roundtable is an international forum for leading practitioners, hosted by Tamsin Dillon of SVA’s MA Curatorial Practice faculty.
Candace Hill-Montgomery is an American multidisciplinary artist, writer, poet, photographer, and educator. Her work spans photography, collage, sculpture, installation, performance, painting, artist books, and weaving. She engages with race, feminism, environmentalism, poverty, political violence, and Black cultural history. Fiber and weaving have become particularly important to her practice, through which she combines materials such as linen, cotton, wool, cashmere, and horsehair with found objects and personal references. Hill-Montgomery has exhibited widely in New York and beyond and has received both a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.
Hill will take us on a journey through the diverse aspects and trajectory of her practice, from early works created from found objects foraged from torn-down buildings and detritus discovered in unknown towns as she drove off the highway following an instinct. She painted over and cleaned up the pieces to create new built environments. Sometimes all that is left now are the photographs she also made. We’ll look together at how the practice has grown and changed, how vital being an educator has been, and the impact it has on her own work.
