The Artists Roundtable is an international forum for leading practitioners, hosted by Tamsin Dillon of SVA’s MA Curatorial Practice faculty.
Tania Candiani is a Mexican interdisciplinary artist whose practice brings together visual art, sound, literature, music, architecture, science, and traditional forms of knowledge. Working across installation, performance, sculpture, sound, and multimedia, she explores translation between different systems of communication and investigates relationships between technology, nature, labor, history, and cultural memory. Her work often engages with ancestral knowledge, craft traditions, and collective forms of making. Candiani represented Mexico at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015 and has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Smithsonian Institution research grant.
Candiani will talk about how she came to develop her intense focus on systems of communication in her practice, especially exploring sound, a central aspect of her work. In particular, she will explore her process and recent participation in multiple international projects, what human perception means for her, and how she works across collective, affective, and ritual experience.
